With the New Year fast approaching, many will be setting goals and ambitions for the next 12 months. This can be a daunting exercise, clouded by a cost-of-living crisis, economic turbulence and ever-moving societal shifts—not to mention growing awareness of mental health issues which can put up barriers to self-evaluation.

One increasingly popular way of attempting to develop clarity is through the hiring of a life coach. Dr. Amit Rawal, Lecturer in Management at Bayes Business School, explains what the role of a coach brings, and outlines when somebody should and should maybe not seek the services of one.

What is a life coach?

“To understand whether or not to invest in a coach, it is first important to understand its role and purpose,” Dr. Rawal said.

A life coach helps clients to raise their own awareness of their strengths, beliefs, values, and realities, while helping them with their journey from where they are now to where they want to be.

“They can be highly beneficial for those seeking personal growth. By undergoing life coaching, individuals can transform their lives through feeling empowered and a sense of accomplishment after completing their goals in ways that they may never have imagined.”

Do I need a coach?

“It is important to note that life coaching is only really suitable or worthwhile for those who have a goal or some idea of what they would like to achieve.

“For those who are unsure if they have a particular goal, or even an idea, life coaching may not be right for them at this stage in life. Instead, they might benefit from other interventions like mentoring if they seek advice on a particular area. Alternatively, therapy may be a more appropriate intervention if they wish to explore previous traumas.”

Choose the right person for you

“If you do opt for a life coach in 2025, you should do your research on who is best qualified to help you develop your own roadmap. There are many life coaches with a wide range of specialties, so zooming in on what you want to achieve can help you to invest in the right guidance.

Depending on the goal that you want to achieve, there is likely to be a life coach suitable for you. For instance, you may seek a coach that specializes in career coaching over one that focuses on health and well-being.

“Many coaches offer a complimentary call to get to know them and find out if you are a right fit to work with each other.

“Ultimately, life coaches can only be a productive investment if you have an end goal in mind or a particular area in your life you want to develop. If you are also seeking support in a safe space through active listening and thought-provoking questions, then a life coach may be exactly what you need.”
